This black walnut Regency chest of drawers was probably made in France. It was among the furnishings of the Château de Vaudreuil, in Montreal, home of Pierre de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil, Governor of New France from 1755 to 1760. When he was forced to surrender Montreal to General Amherst on September 8, 1760, he returned to France and sold his residence and his seigneuries in Vaudreuil and Rigaud to his cousin Michel Chartier, Marquis de Lotbinière.
