The plague writing by the Bamberg doctor Adam Schilling, who served as private physician to four Bamberg bishops, is characterized by the close connection between faith and knowledge in the 16th century. The knowledge that the spread of diseases can be traced back to environmental influences, poor hygiene or contagion is embedded in a religious worldview in which epidemics are interpreted as punishments sent by God for people's sins.
