About the Work: Conceived in 1967, this painting was eventually produced thirty years later. With strong references to the abstraction of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, this work was based on the simple idea of the chessboard. The artist’s intention was to visually replicate the linear or sequential thinking required in a game of chess. By removing all color, he asks the viewer to focus on the geometric grid and pattern of the work.
