Relief under Cybele

Artus Quellinus the Elder1653

Royal Palace Amsterdam

Royal Palace Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Various agricultural implements and items symbolic of the earth goddess are shown hanging from a nail. The implements include a hoe, a scythe, sickles, a spade and a rake. Various fruits of the earth, both native and exotic, are immortalised in marble. They include corncobs, pomegranates, grain, roses, artichokes, grapes, pulses, olive branches and laurel leaves. The relief also shows Cybele’s city wall crown, a cornucopia, two tambourines and a blazing torch. These refer to the abundant fruits of the earth (the cornucopia and crown), to life (the torch) and to the festivities of harvest time (the tambourines).
