AD 1656 - 1661

London, United Kingdom

This is a drawing of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (reigned 1605–1627) copied by the celebrated Dutch artist Rembrandt. Courtly life was often the focus of Mughal miniature paintings, which fascinated Rembrandt.

Jahangir is shown within his court seated on a divan dressed in his finery. Rembrandt has paid great attention to the Mughal clothing, but has altered the perspective to provide a greater sense of depth in keeping with European artistic style.
