The Mapula Embroidery Project, established in 1991 in the Winterveld region of South Africa, represents a significant intersection of art, cultural preservation, and socio-economic empowerment. This initiative equips women, many of whom face systemic socio-economic challenges, with skills in embroidery, enabling them to produce intricate textile artworks that serve as both economic assets and cultural artifacts. The embroidered pieces often depict narratives of daily life, cultural heritage, and pressing social issues, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary thematic exploration. Widely recognized for their artistic and cultural value, these works have been exhibited internationally and integrated into prominent private and institutional collections. Beyond its artistic contributions, the Mapula Embroidery Project functions as a model of community development, demonstrating the capacity of collaborative art-making to foster economic agency and preserve intangible cultural heritage.

"Remember that AIDS is not a sin" is the powerful message Maria Rengane seeks to convey through her narrative AIDS quilts, designed to challenge the stigmatization of living with AIDS within her community and emphasize the importance of speaking openly about the disease. Rengane was not only an expert embroiderer but also the leader of one of three Mapula groups. In 2015, she traveled to Rwanda to help establish another sewing group, furthering her commitment to empowering others through craft.
