Watercolor painting of the USS Maine arriving in Havana harbor on January 25, 1898. The Maine is steaming into the harbor while a vessel with full sail follows. A small sloop is ahead of the Maine and the seas are relatively high. The inscription below the painting reads, "It is 9am on January 25, 1898. The United States battleship "Maine" is making the turn for Morrow Castle at the entrance to Havana Harbor, sent there to protect American interests as hostilities between Spain and the United States increase. The destruction of the Maine on February 15th inaugurated America's rallying cry during the Spanish-American war which began a few short months after the Maine disaster."
