This firearm, along with the Remington rifle (model 1871), was declared regulation for the cavalry troops of the Civil Guard by Royal Order on February 24, 1871. This is a breechloading, 11 mm (0.43") caliber weapon, requiring manual successive loading of the cartridges in the chamber. With a rifled barrel, the Remington Rolling Block system used in this shotgun consisted of a rolling block that rotated on an axis to seal the chamber. It was held in place by the hammer, preventing the cartridge from moving back when fired. When the weapon was cocked, the circular block was released, allowing another cartridge to be loaded into the chamber.
