In 1951, Xu Beihong was ill but traveled to experience life around the Shu and Yi River Project in Shandong. He collected source material and prepared to create a contemporary version of The Foolish Old Man Moving a Mountain, reflecting the world-changing spirit of New China. He also made portraits for many model workers, including Yang Wenming, Zhang Jin, He Jingde, Lü Fangbin, and Ren Jidong.
