The historic center of Salvador is an eminent example of Portuguese urban structuring adapted to a colonial site. It is distinguished by two areas: the upper city is an acropolis perched atop an 85m high escarpment which has an administrative and residential function, and the lower city is where commercial activities revolve around the port.
