Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné (1626-1696), was a French aristocrat, famed for her letter writing, which was published in the early 18th century. Beginning in 1816, Galerie Metallique Des Grands Hommes Francais produced a large series of portrait medals honoring over 100 prominent French figures. This sulphide portrait was cast from the portrait medal of Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, sculpted by Raymond Gayrard and minted in Paris in 1816.
