Replica prison bonnet

1909-1914

Museum of London

Museum of London
London, United Kingdom

Replica white cotton prison bonnet painted with black convict arrows. Sewn to the sides of the bonnet are ribbons for tying under the chin. The bonnet formed part of a replica prison uniform made by a Suffragette. Such items were worn by ex-Suffragette prisoners at public events including processions and fund-raising bazaars to highlight the conditions under which imprisoned Suffragettes were held. In 1909 an exhibit entitled 'Prison Life' formed part of the Women's Exhibition held at Princes Skating Rink. The exhibit included a replica prison cell 'peopled' by Suffragettes dressed in replica prison clothing and taking part in prison activities such as sewing.
