The newly formed Kelly Gang ambushed a search party of four police officers at their Stringy Bark Creek campsite on the 25th of October 1878. Constables Scanlon and Lonigan and Sergeant Kennedy were shot dead while Constable Thomas McIntyre, fled the scene. He made it to the Mansfield Police Station where he wrote a report giving a description of the events which took place. A new search party was organised by the newly appointed Sub-Inspector Pewtress, in the hopes of catching the gang.
