Direct Action Day (16 August 1946), also known as the Great Calcutta Killings, was an incident of widespread communal violence. It was organised by the Muslim League to assert its demand for a separate Muslim homeland. There was total anarchy in the whole city for the next few days, the burn of which was even felt at Presidency. This is the lengthy report that was written by Professor P. C. Mahalanobis, the then Principal to the Home Secretary of the Government of Bengal, describing how the College and the Eden Hindu Hostel was affected by this gruesome event and the measures that were taken by the college authority to deal with the situation.
