Hangzhou, China

This rectangular wood fan case, composed of eight stories of drawers equipped with copper-plate knobs, could accommodate 15 fans with the help of dividers and partitions. An inscription of four Chinese characters meaning “to praise and promote virtuous governance”, together with the calligrapher’s signature of “by Dai Chunfeng, a Buddhist householder” can be seen when the front cover of this case is pulled upwards. Thanks to the simple but ingenious craftsmanship, this fan case exudes a sense of elegance and decorum.
