Shown is the residence of S.T. Wellman. Samuel Thomas Wellman (1847-1919) was an American steel industry titan and a prolific inventor. Among his achievements, Wellman improved upon the open-hearth process of producing steel rail and built the first commercially successful open-hearth furnace in the United States in 1869. He also played a key role in the development of the Hulett unloader, which enabled the unloading of taconite from the iron ore boats of the Great Lakes. Wellman founded the Cleveland-based Wellman-Seaver-Morgan Engineering Company, which operates today under the name of Dravo Wellman.
