Bach was employed as organist at the Weimar court in 1708. In 1714 the duke promoted him to concertmaster, with the obligation to compose a cantata for the court service once a month. The texts of the works came from the Weimar court librarian Salomon Franck. Many of the compositions he composed in this way were later performed again by Bach as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, as this text booklet shows.
