The composition of this retable is a variation of Portuguese Baroque, typical of the Portuguese retables in the first half of the 18th century. The design of the retable revolves around a central representation of the “Calvary”, which is surrounded by a “lace” of angels in polychrome wood. The bas-relief background made of plaster with tempera paint is an allusion to the Jerusalem walls. A 17th-century sculpture of the Pietà in gilt and polychrome wood completes the tribune. The central part of the retable is flanked by two pairs of twisted pseudo-solomonic columns highly decorated with grapes, birds and baby angels. The carved wood here is different from that in other chapels because of its exuberant multicoloured quality.
