The Portuguese Loureiro was born in 1853 in the city of OPorto, where he began his studies as a painter, and then migrated to Lisbon to continue his learning. In 1879, he received an artistic scholarship, granted every five years, to study in another country. Already in Paris, he broke the rules of the scholarship: married, had a child and, because of an illness, did not send one of his works to the Lisbon Salon. Without the scholarship, he spent a period in London, but migrated to Melbourne, Australia, arriving in an almost complete state of invalidity. He became a well-known portraitist of Australian society and won several local awards, being considered the author of "one of the best portraits ever painted in Australia". He returned to OPorto in 1901 and suddenly died in the following year in the city of Terras de Bouro.
