Three quarter length elderly gentleman seated right to left. He wears eccleseastical dress. HIs right hand rests on his crossed legs and his left hand holds both a walking stick and pair of glasses. The sitter (1834-1924), was a Church of England clergyman, author, and folksong collector. He is perhaps best known for reviving the folksong Widecombe Fair.

Sydney Carter was born in Exeter and began his career in the city; his studio was in the Old Law Library
