Revised North Elevation Design

Christopher Wren1702

St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral
United Kingdom

Engraved in 1702 from a lost revision made in 1675 of no. 12 (and reversed south-north in the printing process), this shows a version of the transept end closer to the executed building. This is a unique proof copy preserved with the St Paul's drawings; the print was not titled or issued in this state because by 1702 Wren had changed his mind about the design of the dome. The plate-maker was therefore asked to obliterate the dome and substitute a revised design; the revision was then published, although Wren soon changed again both the dome and the west towers.

The two extra pieces pasted on show the drum and dome as finally built, but they really have nothing to do with the original print and are not to the same scale.
