A terracotta kunda like this, would often have stones inlaid into the base. It strengthens the bottom and prevents the mortar from breaking. It also helps in creating a coarse surface that aids in better grinding of the contents. This danda kunda had just been used to prepare a spice paste at the time of recording it.
