This piece forms part of the series Rhythms in Space (Ritmos en el Espacio), the third abstract series, which Pablo Serrano conceived, specifically, between 1958 and 1959. He attempted to capture dynamism and movement, alluding to the rapid succession of events that current life entails, as well as vital anguish. The creative process of this series began with a series of drawings created as gestures that were later translated into three dimensions using lightweight metal rods. Here, straight iron rods of similar dimensions have been soldered to achieve the desired form—something that distinguishes this piece from others in the series that use curved shapes. This way, Serrano liberates sculpting from volume and weight, approaching the experiences of Alexander Calder. And, as in this example, he designs the pieces to be hung, swinging, bringing the concept of movement to its ultimate conclusion.
