An urban landscape that marks the early beginnings of Portuguese Modernism. The Ribeira Street Market in Lisbon is the theme of this painting: an enormous umbrella protects one of the stallholders as she exhibits her wares, while two people observe her market stall. Yet more merchandise can be seen in this area. In the background are some houses, marking the limits of the visual field. The sun is blazing hot and the figures and objects present somewhat blurred outlines.
Mário Augusto developed his own techniques from the artistic training that he received, and as a result of the trips that he made abroad, beginning to earn a reputation for the harmonious use that he made of colours and for the delicacy of his style.
