Rice Pickers

During her last trip to India in 1977, Ângela painted Rice Pickers. A recurrent backdrop in her landscapes, rice is one of the most important crops of India and the staple food of its people.
The painting illustrates a typical rural scene in a rice field at the time of harvest. The three human figures are central to the narrative, where two men collect rice while a woman waits for her basket to be filled. The grey skies punctuate with white clouds are superbly executed and illuminate the human figures that are than reflected on the water body present in the field.
After relocating permanently to New York, USA in the late 60’s, Ângela visited India every two years for extended periods of time. Perhaps not intentionally, this last depiction of Goa emanates a nostalgic mood possibly inspired by childhood memories of her ancestral land.
