A valuable part of Vytautas Kasiulis’ creative legacy are his pastel works. In these works, drawn in pastel on black paper, the painter’s specific creative manner is revealed – the shapes of the objects become visible thanks to lighter contours or precisely placed strokes of light, creating a negative image effect. Th idyllic, peaceful village life scene shines in the colours of a medieval stained glass panel. The expression, the power of the colouring, and the solidness of the compositional structure put V. Kasiulis’ pastel works on an equal footing with his finished, large format, oil painting canvases.
