Riding on the thrust power from General Electric J-47 jet engines, the fastest known bomber and fighter in the world - the Boeing B-47 Stratojet and the North American F-86 Sabre - are seen together in flight for the first time in this photograph made somewhere over Kansas. The Stratojet, powered by six J-47 engines - each of which is rated at more than 5,200 pounds of thrust - can fly at more than 600 miles an hour. The Sabre, which has a similar GE power plant, holds the official world's speed record of 670.981 miles an hour. Both planes are in service with the U.S. Air Force. General Electric produces engines for these front-line Air Force planes at plants in Lynn and Everett, Mass., and Lockland, Ohio.
