In the mid-20th century, American pop culture glorified the exploration, conquest, and settlement of the American West. Movies, radio serials, and TV shows featured cowboys, sheriffs, pioneers, and settlers as the heroes of epic tales about "taming the frontier." Young boys (and it was mostly boys) who adapted the cowboy stories to their own make-believe play, needed the toy props and toy weaponry reflective of those long-ago days. Toy manufacturers like Mattel, Marx, Nichols, and others supplied pint-size heroes with six-shooters and rifles required to clean up the streets of Dodge City and rid the town of outlaws. From a vantage point of the 21st century, such violent play concerns parents and child specialists who worry that chidlren allowed to play with toy weapons might grow up to be violent adults.
