Ring

This gold ring has been enamelled in black and white and set with a large faceted amethyst. The dark stone would have been even more striking against the pastel coloured clothing becoming increasingly popular in the 17th century. That century also saw a general development in jewellery fashion, with expanding trade providing an increased variety of stones, while advanced techniques allowed for more creative stone-cutting.
