Riotous Colors in Minaret Gowns

Extraordinary costumes from the Russian artist Léon Bakst for New York theatrical performances.
Exiled from Moscow, Léon Bakst has found himself in Paris. The artist who once created eccentric costumes for the Imperial Ballet is currently working for the Parisian stage. His most recent achievement displayed here is the minaret gown. New York will be able to enjoy these extravagant costumes that the actresses of Doll Girl — Charles Frohman’s new project — will be wearing. The expressiveness of the minaret gown lies more in its color than in its silhouette. In these clothes the entire spectrum colors — blue, red, lavender, pink, orange, grey, green, with their numerous transitional shades — can be found. Peacock’s feathers give an idea for decorations in one part of the dress, whereas a completely new palette appears on the other part. The result is the amazing rampage of mixed hues — an artistic effect that we have never come across before. An important addition to this Oriental splendor is Parisian chic and audacity with respect to style and lines. Few have attempted to implement concepts of this color and constructive complexity, but Bakst contrived to achieve the desired effect by using rich satin, gauze, and chiffon drapery. He plays with beads of all colors to add new refined nuances to each element of his creations.
