The Emperor Augustus is depicted with the back of his head covered by a flap of his cloak (capite velato), an element linked to Roman religiosity. The rendering of the hair and the physiognomy lead us to date the statue to the Julio-Claudian period. The portrait was probably part of a cycle displayed in a public building in the forum.
