This scene was once thought to be of the Frome valley at Stapleton but Danby is just as likely to have painted it towards the end of his life when he was living at Exmouth in Devon. It shows his continued fascination with the flickering effects of sunlight shining through trees, reflecting off water and creating rich shadows. Deep in the shadow on the right a boy sits fishing.
