This type of headdress orginated with the tribes along the Missouri River and spread westward to the Great Plains. Made from porcupine guard hairs and dyed deer hair, roaches are still an important part of the Plains male dancer’s attire and are seen at pow-wows. Plains or Midwest, 1890-1920.
