When their husbands wore their official, semiformal attire (jifu), Chinese ladies typically wore a surcoat and heavily ornamented skirt over trousers or leggings. The women's surcoat opened down the front and could be fitted with a rank badge on the front and back like a bufu, but the body of the women's coat often featured colorfully embroidered ornament, with patterned cuffs attached to the sleeves.
