The President Woodrow Wilson House

The President Woodrow Wilson House
Washington, DC, United States

Bronze sculpture of Robert Emmet dressed in 19th century clothes with right hand and foot slightly forward set on a bronze base. This statue is a copy of a larger one that now stands at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and S Street NW in Washington, DC. The original was donated to the Smithsonian Institution in June 1917 in Wilson's presence. The miniature was presented to Wilson on January 10, 1918 by a committee of men of Irish ancestry. The original statue was later moved near the Irish Embassy. The statue represents Irish independence and Emmet's pose is modeled as he is accepting his death penalty.
