Rodrigo Borgia (1431-1503) was elected Pope in 1492, taking the name of Pope Alexander VI. He was the nephew of Pope Calixtus III, during his papacy he accentuated papal authority throughout the Italian peninsula, fixed the dividing meridian between the zones of power of Castile and Portugal for the distribution of rights on the lands of the New World, and supported both the arts and sciences of his time.
