National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

A roll of aromatic gum wrapped in banana fiber collected and made by the liangulo and the taita. This gum was obtained from the liangulo at kilibasi where the gum producing mutungu tree is found in plenty. It is used as a medicine to get rid of worms and stomach ache normally mixed with porridge(uji) and taken orally. It is believed that a great deal of illness is caused by bad blood therefore a cut is made on the shoulder and a cup is filled to remove the bad blood. A small horn horn is placed over the cup, the stick is pulled out and the hole sucked to create a vacuum. The horn is adhere on the shoulder and the blood is sucked out filling the cup. Most people in this community have a scar on their shoulders as a result of this operation.
