The painting is titled Rolling Country and depicts rolling land with house and tree in foreground and hills in background. It was painted by Elliot Clark and has a gilt frame with beaded molding. President Wilson purchased the painting from the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1915. In a letter to the artist, President Wilson acknowledges the purchase, and indicates his sadness that his first wife, Ellen Axson Wilson, who was a painter herself, was not alive to appreciate the painting.
