In 1970, the author donated the manuscript of “Kołysanie” [“Rolling”] to the Ossolineum Library for a contemporary literary manuscripts exhibition. It was written on a ship during a voyage along the Africa coast and still bears the marks of seawater. From then on, the author began to collect manuscripts that she had previously destroyed after publishing in print. “Lulanie” (1972) was her subsequent book with a maritime theme. From 1961, Szumanska travelled the world on Polish merchant ships as a reporter and member of the Mariners’ Club. The sea became her passion and gave her a sense of freedom, which she tried to bring to her readers. The manuscript is part of Ewa Szumańska-Szmorlinska’s collection.
