Roman Fountain with Cattle and Figures (Le Midi)

Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchemc.1645-46

The founders of Dulwich Picture Gallery framed this work as a pair to Travelling Peasants. However, it is different in size and was probably painted in the previous decade.

Superficially, this painting makes a convincing pair to Travelling Peasants. Several characters seem to appear in both – the milkmaid in yellow and blue, her companion in red and green, the little dog, the goat, the red cow and the white cow. But these are generic types for Berchem – the milkmaid in yellow and blue also appears, with at least one of the cows, in A Farrier and Peasants near Roman Ruins, also in the Dulwich collection.

  • Further Information: Nicolaes Berchem was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher, who belonged to the second generation of the Italianates. He was one of the most famous and financially successful Dutch artists of the 17th century. Berchem's influence was considerable, not only in the Netherlands. In France he influenced 18th-century painters including François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the later of whom is also represented in the gallery. The panoramic vista and bright, saturated colours are typical of Berchem’s work in the 1640s and 1650s. The most important element, the two women and the fountain, appear in many of Berchem's works such as in a drawing in the Teylers Museum
