These photographs show different views of the Roman Wall of Lugo, inscribed on the World Heritage List on the 30th November 2000. Its entire circuit survives intact. The legend says that the Romans built the wall to protect not a city but a forest, the "Sacred Forest of Augustus", in Latin "Lucus Augusti", hence the name of Lugo. Today the forest is a mystery, but the wall still stands in defiance of time and speaking to who knows how to listen to it. Built over 17 centuries ago following the guidelines of the elegant works of Vitruvius, the Wall of Lugo measures more than 2 km and has 10 doors. Walking along its rampart, which in some stretches reaches 7 m wide, and stopping at some of its 71 remaining towers (of the original 85) allow for feeling up close the power of the Imperial Rome. And also, enjoy the best views.
