This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Romanian immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
Gabriela Lana explained that ‘the banner represents some of the things which we have brought with us from our native land’. Among these are carol singing and the presentation of bread, salt and drink to guests. The Plugusorul is the boy with the whip giving New Year greetings and the Sorcova is a well-wisher. Crafts include pottery and wood-carving, egg-decorating, spinning and embroidery. The endless column signifies aspirations to perfection. The church and icon of St Nicholas emphasise the important role of religion in helping maintain cultural values. The use of blue, yellow and red, the colours of Romania and South Australia, highlights the links between the two areas.
