- Descripción larga: In 1850, the Don Quixote Room seemed frozen in time. The bed with the canopy where Pedro had passed away continued to stamp its presence and inspiring the respect and reverence that the deathbed of a king-emperor deserved. For those entering the room for the first time, the actual square layout of the room does not prove perceptible due to the circular transformation achieved by the radial format of the flooring and the two pairs of columns set in the corner sections. The mirrors and the gold leafed ornaments, whether carved or in paper mache, are very visible in the watercolour by Le Feubure, as well as the original bedside tables that still remain alongside the decorative painting depicting scenes from the life of Don Quixote de la Mancha, concluded prior to 1766. The main inspiration of these paintings are the engravings based on Charles Antoine Coypel’s Don Quixote scenes for the Gobelins tapestry manufactory. The quixotic paintings today hanging in the room were completed in 1940 by the artist Fernando Mardel to replace the 18th century originals that were destroyed by the fire that broke out on the night of 4th October 1934. The rare early 20th century photograph featured in this virtual exhibition enables the appreciation of some of the scenes from the courtesan Don Quixote that accompanied the final gazes of Pedro.
