Luther dealt with the subject of burial places and pleaded for the cemeteries to be moved to the gates of the city: “A burial should be a quiet, fine place, [...] almost a holy place, and there along the walls one could have such devout pictures and paintings painted.” Thus epitaphs were placed under Schwibbögen by rich citizens. In the 19th century most of the crypts were filled up and the remaining epitaphs of the 16th century were housed in Luther's birthplace.
