Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

The thirteen beads of this extremely rare rosary are formed of pairs of half-spheres in rock crystal, with a mounts in gilded silver. The faces of the half-sphere are painted and gilded with devotional scenes from the Old Testament and with pairs of saints. The little cross, which is also in rock crystal with pendant beads at the tips of the arms, bears a Crucifixion on one side, and a Virgin in Glory on the other. This rare type of rosary is one of the most interesting works in the glass collection received by the Museum through the Emanuele d’Azeglio Bequest.
