Rugs made in the town of Waldoboro, Maine, often have shaped piles. This effect was achieved by first creating an even surface of woolen pile fiberss. Particular design elements, such as the flowers in this example, were then highlighted by having their threads cut at various heights in order to produce a contoured surface.
