Parchment, illuminated by the Augsburg workshop of Georg Beck and Leonhard Beck
The rule of the Brigittine order was created as a luxury manuscript on the occasion of the foundation of the monastery in Altomünster. It was probably intended for reading to the community and contains full-page miniatures by an illuminator presumably from Landshut. The historised initials and vines however are from the workshop of the Augsburg illuminator Georg Beck and his son Leonhard.
Fol. 3v: The seated Saint Bridget – with Christ and Mary in a sky segment above her – hands her rule to the female and male members of the order founded by her. Altomünster was a monastery for both, nuns and monks. Up to the present, Brigittine nuns wear the characteristic linen crowns with red dots indicating the five cicatrices of Christ shown in this illumination.
