Rural Free Delivery mailbox

This barrel-shaped mailbox with a red flag is typical of mailboxes along Rural Free Delivery routes. This mass-produced box met the basic regulations imposed by the Post Office Department. Although not decorative, the simple design served as a protective container to send and receive mail.
