Banded iron is the evidence of oxygen’s appearance in the early atmosphere. Iron dissolved in seawater in ferrous state when there was no free oxygen on earth surface. Then blue-green bacteria released oxygen through photosynthesis, ferric oxides formed tiny particles and deposited on sea floor. The bands resulted from seasonal variations of seawater.
