In 1912, concurrent with the issuance of the first building plots in ground-rent in the northen part of Mežaparks, was solemnly opened Riga Zoo as well. Already in the end of the 19th century in Riga regulary performed traveling menageries, but a request for a plot of granting in Ķeizarmežs for permanent zoo installing, Riga city administration recieved only in 1907, in 1911 - signed a contract for the land receipt and the next year for viewing was available collection of 88 different species of animals. Although the two World Wars influenced Zoo functioning however mostly its buildings are a little modified and survived to the present day, lately zoological garden is actively extended and well-maintained.
